The only way I see to create solid dependable associations it to incorporate dimensions in the geometry data file, not in an independent drawings.
This is called PMI in the MCAD world. PMI is based on the 3d model being the 'single source of truth' or MBD . Nice touch: '2d drawings by exception'. Kind of hard to argue with this way of thinking. Drawings are clear because they simplify and filter. So, there is always something missing. I guess you need both. But those MCAD examples are pretty simple as everything is broken up into little discrete parts are easy to dimension and annotate. Steel or precast concrete is similarly easy . Your typical floorplan will be way busier. We will probably need Drawing Rules like this example to void all those dims and annotation do not collide with each other. If the drawing or presentation of the information contained in the model is automated and context sensitive, then the user is free to focus on the model and not worry about keeping things in sync. Bentley Orthograpohics Manager looks pretty sophisticated as well. But, short of all this automation rules or styles, it would be good to look at improving the way CE's Named Boundaries work. If memory serves, you can make the NB shape align with another shape called the Drawing Boundary in the Sheet model. This should stop your view extents going off piste when you move things around. There were a lot of ideas being thrown about during the beta, maybe we will see more of them implemented in the upcoming CEU1 release?

I used Slid Edge 1.xx about 16 - 20 years ago it was unbelievable then with auto dims from 3d solid model , that could also be used in stress analysis later in other packages .. I have to admit it was superior to cad in every way but needed a lot of training ... if it was great then it must be phenomenal nowadays.. I wish we had an easy way to do the dim association automatically generated but for a road alignment that has been redesigned rather than modified I cant see how peter can do anything else than what we have been doing.. apart from scale annotation dims in the model space I can see placed notes ( dim leader) being associated with the existing model but only if you modify the model.. I wonder if this could all be done in inroads instead, change the model out put or alignment and spit out dims notes etc...
I wonder if this could all be done in inroads instead, change the model out put or alignment and spit out dims notes etc...
Nah... check out Named / Drawing Boundaries. In this age of (fr)agile development where no one bothers to test and workflows are so complicated that the domain expert proj managers who write the spec for the devs struggle to identify the 'Right It' to build... endless beta testing by the user and 'in the wild' co-creation is the New Normal.
Neither the survey title or post mentioned CE it just said Marc wanted to know how people work so they could plan how to implement features in future software so the implication was let me see how you work or your work flow so we can maybe make it better or easier or permit it.. and yes I used V8i..
I to did this in SS3!
OMHO as a user I would not waste anymore time playing with CE until the next commercial release .. I think it should have stayed Beta alot longer... but i suppose this way more people can test it for Bentley... but I wouldnt distribute it at work place... just test at home...
I have CONNECT on my pc but generally don't use it. It has too many problems at the moment, especially is PN stops working for no reason, and is generally slower than SS3. A couple of other (younger) users also have it but prefer SS3 also.
You just have to make it a site specific and and add the config changes for everyone .. we could use the site config for that right?
Spot on! MS_RFDIR should be defined in a configuration file stored on a server so that everyone in that project gets the same configuration. There are several advantages to that approach... Each instance of MicroStation on any computer using the same configuration sees the same set of reference folders If project or reference folders are moved (e.g. IT installs a new server) only one file must be edited to point MS_RFDIR at the new location(s) No need to use absolute reference paths or relative reference paths
Hello, I am using Microstation v8i SS2. I have successfully printed a 3D pdf and have toggled all the 3D content to display in the pdf by checking the 3d items in the preferences of the pdf. However, is it possible to print the pdf to display the levels in the pdf so I can toggle those on or off?
yes edit printer configuration file pdf.pltcfg in driver properties toggle Enable optional content to on , this lets the pdf have your level names and ref name attachments too... It would have been better if Bentley had labelled this as Output level names enabled on / off But if I remember correctly it only will export levels that are turned on in the view so make sure you have all the levels you need or create a ref file and name it optional content so they can turn it off later in the pdf.. for me this is too complicated I just only have on what I want people to use...
It is the setting in the plot config that determines how a color prints, not how it looks on-screen. You could have something green on-screen print in a grayscale, for example. So if the color you like prints too light, just adjust the setting in the driver. (Print Dialog > File > Edit Print Driver Configuration). Go to Color Maps, double click the color in question, and change the value. Reload the driver before testing.
Good pick up I forgot about that one.. but the colour swatch macro is the best way to test the output and determine which available colour will produce what print especially if you use the edit in the print config.. as you mentioned .. because paper print is the only way to see what effect changes make not the screen as you already pointed out... ..Ill have to file your suggestion in my microstation journal for future use... BTW WCarlton did you try the drwctbl.bas macro in one of your empty cad files ( make sure symbology overrides is disabled first ? )

Hi Alan, Did you manage to solve your Isilon NAS performance issue? 1. Do you only store your drawing files on Isilon NAS? 2. Do you also run your MicroStation configuration from Isilon? Bentley has no specific MicroStation settings to be utilized for using Isilon that I'm aware of. Let me know how you get on. Regards, Anders

Hello Lory, Appreciate the feedback and direction on how to utilize the forum. Sorry I was very busy the other day and just wanted to put it out there that my problem was solved. I actually solved it a different way then suggested. I use Microstation v8i Select series 3. In my Print menu box, I navigated through to Configure Windows Driver, selected the Adobe PDF printer. From her I selected "Preferences" then " Printing Preferences". From here I un-ticked "View Adobe PDF results". Then in the drop down menu for Adobe PDF output Folder, I specified my own folder, and deselected the default which was "Prompt for Adobe PDF filename". These two changes now allow Print Organiser to run smoothly and freely with out me having to continually save and preview. Thanks for your assistance and guidance.

Hello Jon, I am using Microstation V8i Selct series 3. I have created a folder within the folder of the drawings that the xrefs display red. I moved all the xrefs into this folder. This seemed to fix the problem. I will investigate the MS_REFDIR option, as it seems more stable and reliable. Thanks for your help

Forum Post: Locating and replacing missing fonts

Hello all, I am working in Microstation V8i Select Series 3. Some of the drawings I am auditing are very old, and have multiple issues. Thanks to this forum, I have solved most of them. However I have encountered a new problem of missing fonts. When I open some old M01 drawings, there are missing fonts, which creates the problem of text running over boxes or displaying wrong. Is tere a preset library of fonts with microstation? Or do I need to have the missing fonts available to be added to my library? How do I add new fonts and have drawings update with them? Cheers for any help, Andre

Hello Jon. I will ensure the spelling is correct! Thanks. Does it matter where the newly created XREF Folder is within my Drawing Folder Directory? For example, my Drawing Directory is set up like this P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2\US\SE2-US-10000 (This is an individual drawing) can I place the XREF folder at the folder level P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2 or in the next one P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2\US. the SE2 folder has subsets of different drawings, CI, ET, FS, St etc, which use the mostly the same XREFS. If I place at SE2 level, will they be able to find them. If there are some sub folder that reference different XREFS, can I place them all in the one and put it at P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2 so that all the subset folders can find the different files? Thanks

Hi Andre : MS_RFDIR will not pick the sub folder automatically. All the folders including the sub folder should be set. e.g. MS_RFDIR = P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2\ MS_RFDIR > P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2\US\ MS_RFDIR > P:\CML AS BUILTS\SE2\US\SE2-US-10000\ Regards, Leonard Jones.
