Forum Post: [V8i] Keeping shared cell over different levels

$

Hi all, To work according to a costumer specification, our drawings in Microstation should contain all elements in a 2D layer and a 3D layer. To do this, we use shared cells which contain a 2D and a 3D part. This works perfectly: disable the 3D layer, and you get the 2D part of the shared cell, disable the 2D layer and you only get the 3D part of the shared cell. However, as soon as one (accidentally) assigns a new layer to that shared cell, this doesn't work anymore. Suppose the cell looks like this in the element information window. Shared cell on layer Robotparts_2D (Parts of) 2D subcell/group on layer Robotparts_2D (Parts of) 3D subcell/group on layer Robotparts_3D This works as it should: Hide the layer Robotparts_2D, and you'll only see the 3D part. However, suppose you accidentally assign this cell to Clampings_2D, and then back to Robotparts_2D, this doesn't work anymore: if Robotsparts_2D is hidden, both the 2D and 3D part of the part is hidden. However, hiding Robotparts_3D still hides only the 3D part. It is as if the shared cell layer assignment wasn't really 'serious' until it got changed. Is there any way to get the behaviour first described back as soon as I accidentally changed the layer of the shared cell?

Hi Andre, When you say old files do you mean V7 DGN format files? Check this link on fonts in MicroStation: communities.bentley.com/.../8817.fonts-in-microstation The link should answer your questions, let me know if have any further. Regards, Anders

Sorely missed. EdG too. CONNECT isn't foolproof and the same Elmhdr faults exist in CONNECT as well as V8i. I keep getting "Large Level Name dictionaries were encountered" on empty files with no references (did have large number of references) The suggestion to "COMPRESS DESIGN INCLUDEREFS" is not viable/possible on a large Projectwise model. this error seems to upset my Nvidia and Intel HD4000 with large timeouts. Think its something to do with Large Memory as didn't seem to get it when only had access to <4gb. Sometimes the old repair tricks come in handy. Has Filefixer been updated to handle CONNECT dgns? There shouldn't be too many differences as same format. Not been pestered by them in ages, do they still exist?

That discussion is archived and can't be replied to. So this should be the active discussion? Anyway this Problem isn't solved, no matter what Barry says... Telling users to do a COMPRESS DESIGN INCLUDEREFS in a huge Projectwise model doesn't work in practice. Also it doesn't work even if you do exit PW and just use V8i to do a compress increfs. Some files it just reduces the number from 12000 to 4-5000. I've found verifydgn often finds elmhdr faults on level 0 in some problem files. If the references have been detached then the warning/error remains. It does slow the file down and causes more crashes too. Especially if you have 2 GPUs.

Federated/Combined models although empty can be a strain on any PC no matter how many GB of memory you have installed. First off: If you are using V8i (32bit) on a 64bit system.. check your About Microstation dialog. If you have a NOTE about 'Lock Pages in Memory' then you are not using Large Memory and anything above 4GB is not being used. You have to turn off UAC and make sure Microstation was installed with admin rights to use Large Memory. (Search seLockMemoryPrivilege) As for Large Level Definitions, I have found having a lot of Saved Views referring to references that are no longer attached Up the numbers of level definitions. Also before doing a Full Compress with Include Refs.. you have to manually attach all your Level dgnlibs other wise the levels stay. Seems V8i ss3 doesn't automatically load them if not needed. Of course doing a COMPRESS DESIGN INCLUDEREFS within Projectwise referencing many contracts where you might not have rights just doesn't work and would probably make you very unpopular if you did. I would not advise trying even if you are PW admin. so the only way I could fix some of our files is by exiting PW and using default V8i on the local cache. (see PW.cfg) Also I used the -O1 startup parameter to not load any refs. Of course you need local admin rights and an understanding IT dept. not the standard King of the Hill bunch to do anything about Large memory and using Microstation outside of PW.
In earlier versions, the WINDOW CENTER command would display a preview box if used to select a new center for one view when another view was used to select the point. Also, the command is no longer on the view toolbox. It's not simply turned off, its not available to turn on. And if I'm not mistaken, it had a tool settings Apply to View X. Is there a reason that this no longer works like that or is hidden? I also believe if selected from a view, it assumed the apply to view was the one that the tool originated from. Now, you have to pick the center point and then tell it which view, or make a specific view version - WINDOW CENTER 3 will allow you to pick a new point and make it the center of view 3.
youre right I didnt use it much so I never noticed it missing but the commands still work the same I think it was only up to v95, in v8menu.dgn ( digitizer tablet menu for V8 2004) it is not there but in 55menu.dgn it is this was the digitizer tablet menu for 5.5 for dos so I found this command there and it still works in v8i ss3 P,WINDC1 so you could make your own icons or interface all you change is the view number at the end... I tend to use the zoom + as it shows a preview of the boundary with the window centred on where ever you data point...

Hello Eric, under configurations > MS_Pattern path for Xfrogsample maps is wrongly defined . Correct path is MS_PATTERN > $(MS_SHAREDCONTENTDIR)XfrogSamples\;$(MS_SHAREDCONTENTDIR)XfrogSamples\Billboard\ changing path will resolve issue. Thanks & Rg Harshad
Hello Lory, Appreciate the feedback and direction on how to utilize the forum. Sorry I was very busy the other day and just wanted to put it out there that my problem was solved. I actually solved it a different way then suggested. I use Microstation v8i Select series 3. In my Print menu box, I navigated through to Configure Windows Driver, selected the Adobe PDF printer. From her I selected "Preferences" then " Printing Preferences". From here I un-ticked "View Adobe PDF results". Then in the drop down menu for Adobe PDF output Folder, I specified my own folder, and deselected the default which was "Prompt for Adobe PDF filename". These two changes now allow Print Organiser to run smoothly and freely with out me having to continually save and preview. Thanks for your assistance and guidance.
FYI the windows printer for PDFs is not as good as the the Bentley pdf.pltcfg, that driver you can change to have many more features like named levels in the pdf, 3d pdf, text searchable text, and most important of all TRANSPARENCY on fills etc without the rasterising button ticked .. I dislike ticking the rasterise button with windows printer as it makes line work blurry and worst of all it generates the print in several"TILES"ie little bite size pieces and takes much longer to create the pdf or send prints to printer ... I had to change the compression setting in the pdf.pltcfg from the awful default zipped to much better jpeg so my pdfs get created very fast and small as if I'd compressed them later with adobe full version .. so it lets me use fewer steps I have copied and modified several versions so in my last work place we had 3dPDF.pltcfg LAYERED_PDF.pltcfg (the next two have text searchable turned on) 300dpiPDF.pltcfg 600DPI_PDF.pltcfg AirphotoPDFs.pltcfg ( this one was for large area pdfs so it has lower resolution set on the raster quality and all extra features turned off to make the pdf as small as possible except for compression I always set that to jpeg and allowing transparency ...)

Product(s): MicroStation Version(s): 08.11.09.459 Environment: N\A Area: DGN Subarea: Open Defect Number: 22837 Defect Description MicroStation crashes when attempting to open _Whats New_.dgn that is delivered with the examples workspace ( ...\WorkSpace\Projects\Examples\General\dgn ). Steps to Reproduce Start MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) 08.11.09.459 Select the Examples user > General project > Default interface Select _Whats New_.dgn to open The file will attempt to load, but an information box will pop up that says: " An exception was caught trying to reference attach, open or import this file :" When you click OK you get the dialog to send in your exception and the abort , retry , or cancel dialog. Workaround This issue is already fixed, so next MicroStation official release will have this issue fixed. Option 1: Currently, _Whats New_.dgn file has a reference to structural.ifc . If you rename/remove this “ structural.ifc ” (it is in the same directory as _Whats New_.dgn in the ...\WorkSpace\Projects\Examples\General\dgn directory) – you should be able to open _ Whats New_.dgn file. Option 2: If you open the file with an older version of MicroStation (08.11.09.357 or older) and turn off the reference display of the structural.ifc and Office Building.dgn (which references structural.ifc ) files the file will open without crashing. Hi Chuck, I only use Window Center if I want to select a point that is visible in view A and apply it to view B. If I am only dealing with 1 view window, I prefer to use the command Zoom Out 1 because it only requires 1 click. You can also use it as an alternative to Pan by clicking repeatedly, rather than dragging in the window.

Hello Jon, Sorry if this is such an obvious question, and thanks in advance for all your advice, but where do I input the command MS_RFDIR = P:/CML AS BUILTS/SE2/ Is it in Workspace/Configuration/Reference/Default Attachment Directory? If I edit this and say add my XREF folder to be searched here, do I have to add or edit multiple times, with various xref folders, to enable Microstation to pick up xrefs from entire project? Or can I just do MS_RFDIR = P:/CML AS BUILTS and any xref contained in entire P:/ will be directed to be found by any folder on P:/? I have maybe 45 Folders from various Contractors, with various Xrefs contained within each project. Thanks, Andre

Josh, In the file GBOO-EG03-ECV-MO2-PEL-00001.dgn you have a Saved View with the name TOP. It has a completely different orientation than the built in TOP view. You can override the built in names but it is not recommended. Dan

The product will only look in the folders provided, it will not search elsewhere. So if there are sub-folders needed in the search, then these will need to be provided in the variable.

Forum Post: Connect - Worksets/Workspace Management

Good Morning All, After having some time to wrap my head around some of the changes to the workspace/workset concept, I am seeing that we will have to completely rethink how we have our workspace and projects organized. So, I wanted to get others opinions on how they like the new WorksSets/Workspaces with MicroStation Connect. More precisely the structure of how the projects are organized and managed. Do you like the way the configurations have changed? (i.e. multiple level of standards folders, number of config files) What are some of the drawbacks you see for your company using this new workflow? How do you plan on setting up your standards if you do work for a large firm that has their own Workspace/workset structure and standards? Also, I would like to know if Bentley will be making any changes to the way the Workspace/Workset are currently setup in the future? Thanks, Gerald Piotrowski
